Week 4

Chapters 3-5 gives many useful classroom software that can benefit the students as well as the teacher. There are so many soft wares, but some are not as reliable as others. There were many different types of software that are made to help students. Students are often in a different world in class at times. Computer privileges are very important to students of all ages. Many students find it more exciting just to be on the computer. The drill-and-practice and tutorials will serve as great practice for students. Test generators are a great help for teachers. No matter what type of software that is used, proper training and reliable will determine the success rate.

  •    Drill-And-Practice
According to the text drill-and-practice software provide exercises in which students work example items, usually one at a time, and receive feedback on their correctness.( Roblyer &Doering, 2008. pg.81) Drill-and-practice is distinguished by different programs such as, flash card activities, which are very beneficial for upper grades to help with spelling and vocabulary. I would use flash cards with various subjects. Flash card activity is also perfect for students that are in the lower level. I would have a computer programs such as the one below, which will generate flash cards that will give the students correct answers and reasoning behind it. Drill and practice is a good source that will give immediate feedback to the students. Many online site do not have practices that will not scale essay answers for students. Many students know have internet access at homes. I created a wiki for my 3rd grade class that will have the quizlet application on it that will allow students to review their vocabulary words.

  • Tutorial
My next software would be tutorial. Drill and practice and tutorial goes hand and hand. Drill and practice gives the students corrective feedback, but tutorial will go into more depth. Many students need to fully understand why he or she got the answer wrong. The tutorial will be very beneficial in math. During math intervention, I allow some of my students to go to the computer to the math site listed below that takes them through a tutorial of the lesson that’s being presented, then have drill and practice on the lesson. The text described tutorial as an instructional sequence on a topic, similar to the classroom instruction. (Roblyer &Doering, 2008 pg.86) Many of the tutorials I choose for my students are self-paced. Students will get additive information and more examples to go along with their notes.

  • Instructional Game Teaching Functions

Instructional games keep students involved and interactive. I use this type of software with my 3rd graders. The instructional game Jeopardy can be used to reinforce any subject area. It is very useful during my language arts lessons. The students are in groups and are all participating. The students are learning while having fun. According to the text, it is important to recognize the common characteristics that set aside instructional games apart from other types of software of competition and other amusing entertainment. (Roblyer &Doering, 2008 pg.95) We use our interactive smart board to play Jeopardy each Thursday during language time as a review.

  • Interactive Whiteboard Software

Interactive white boards are very useful inside the classrooms. This system allows the teacher to display items that the students can view while teaching. The interactive whiteboard allows students to move objects around and touch items that appear on the screen. Kindergarten students all love to touch things and be very involved. This interactive board will allow students to get a feel of their work while interacting. The interactive whiteboard are screens that are connected to a computer and digital processor and allows information projected on the screen. (Roblyer &Doering, 2008 pg.147)

  1. I love the idea of using Jeopardy in the classroom. I could see it being used in my classroom for test reviews or for introduction to new material to see how much the students already know. Being actively involved in the learning process is important. Pairing that with technology makes for an exciting, fun learning environment. Of course, it's not only Kindergartners who like to be involved. It is rare that my sixth graders aren't clamoring to have a turn at the Smart Board too.
